Photos and Copyright

We should always be careful about the photos we use so that we don’t get in trouble for copyright issues. Since some of the sites we work on will make money through a subscription, selling something, a membership, etc-it’s to be careful about where we get pictures from. Please let the staff you work with know this as well so they don’t just use random pictures they find somewhere online.

A safe source you can always turn to is photos.byu.edu. With our work login, you can go through the employee portal and have access to hundreds of professional stock images of BYU. There is a BYU watermark on each one that will go away once you download the photo(s) of your choice. There are pictures of buildings on campus, students studying, events, sports, etc. that are all related to BYU.

If a staff member buys a photo, then you can use it on their site. Make sure you know this before using just any photo they send you. Photos of staff members are okay to use as long as a department secretary or the staff members themselves have sent them to you.
